An uplifting story that may seem trite these days...
By R. L. MILLER
...after all, this is an age of cynicism. It's the story of nerdy scientist Theodore Honey (the British term of that time was "boffin"--it specifically targeted scentists) who discovers a potentially deadly flaw in a new airliner. The problem is that nobody but his boss Dr. Scott (from whose viewpoint this story is told) has any faith in his theory. After all, oddballs don't have very high credibility factors. So Scott sends Honey over to Canada to investigate a recent crash of one of those planes, only to have it turn out that the plane he takes is also one of that model. Which makes for a particularly gripping scene--it's the centerpiece of the James Stewart movie based on this book. Other important characters here are Honey's motherless daughter, an actress he's a fan of who's also on the flight--he reminds her of an old friend she knew before she became famous, the plane's captain who is increasingly unsure that Honey is a crackpot, plus a stewardess who not only shares her captain's point of view--but finds Honey strangely compelling in an even more important way. Nowadays you don't often find this human a story in so short a book. Shute's best known book is "On The Beach".

The technology is dated--the story isn't.
By Gary M. Greenbaum
When Dr. Theodore Honey, a boffin of an aviation scientist, predicts that the wings on a new type of aircraft will begin falling off, he is sent across to Canada to investigate a previous crash. Bad choice--he is so unimpressive that when he learns that the aircraft he is on has already exceeded his estimated time to failure, he can only stop the flight by wrecking it when it stops to refuel at Gander. Almost everyone believes he's crazy except for a few--including the assistant director at his place of work, a stewardess, and a movie actress.
Shute is at his best in his characterizations--such as Monica Teasdale the fading American movie actress, who falls in love with Honey as she once did with a man before she became famous. She soon realizes she can never have Honey and must step aside for the stewardess, who can give him children and maintain him in his work, as well as give him love. The details are amusing--the actress, from Indiana, uses the word "hoosier" to the mystification of the British characters
As in most of Shute's books, there are no villians. The fact that many of the characters are working against each other does not make any of them evil, and when the truth is revealed, they quickly begin to work together.
For the information of readers, the book made a fairly poor movie starring (I kid you not), Jimmy Stewart as Honey. But as so few of Shute's books were made into movies, it is worth watching for that reason.

They don't write them like that any more
By Roger Brunyate
This 1948 novel was one of the first adult books I read as a boy; remembering it fondly, I wanted to see how it stood up now. The brief answer: very well, although it shows its age. Such a book could never be published today, and in many ways that is a pity.

Nevil Shute Norway was an aircraft engineer by profession, and most of his novels (of which A TOWN LIKE ALICE is the best-known) touch to some degree on flying; in NO HIGHWAY, aircraft engineering is the entire background. The narrator, Dennis Scott, is head of a research department at the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough, England. One of his scientists, a rather unworldly widower named Theodore Honey, is convinced that Britain's latest transatlantic passenger aircraft, the Reindeer, is liable to catastrophic metal fatigue in the tail after so many hours' flying time, and convinces Scott that all Reindeers must be grounded before they approach that maximum. Unfortunately, two aircraft have already reached the danger point. One has recently crashed in a remote area of Labrador, and when Honey is sent out to investigate, he discovers he is traveling in the other one.

Shute's strength is that he writes what he knows, straightforwardly and without frills. He assumes that the reader will be interested in the technology, and in the bureaucratic procedures that Scott must go through to convince the appropriate agencies of the danger. It is true that some of Honey's theories sound kooky, to put it mildly, and it is hard to believe that time-to-fracture is as predictable as he makes out. But in 1954, six years after the book was published, Britain's Comet fleet, the world's first commercial passenger jet aircraft, suffered a series of fatal accidents that were ultimately put down to metal fatigue; the episode essentially ended Britain's domination of the transatlantic market. That era was about to change anyhow; one of the pleasures of the book is to go back before the jumbo jet, when transatlantic aircraft has to refuel at places like Gander in Newfoundland, and carried only a few dozen passengers in easy luxury.

NO HIGHWAY is also a heart-warming love story. This requires some suspension of contemporary cynicism, for Shute's character painting (especially his women, often referred to as "girls") now seems rather simplistic, in common with many of the popular writers of his generation. They don't write them like that any more -- with one notable exception: I suspect that the popularity of Alexander McCall Smith (author of THE SUNDAY PHILOSOPHY CLUB) is precisely because he too writes in the simple emotional terms of his boyhood reading. If you want Smith's warmth applied to more boyish subjects, you might do worse than look into Shute.

Numerous Errors Within
By N H Tanner
This book is a nicely-written, pleasant read, but some of the errors in it diminish its shining stars. Aside from the factual errors previously cited by others, there are more disturbing typos and errors; I will cite two--just for the sake of brevity--that should have been easily picked up in proofing/editing but weren't: There is a gray panel in the World Trade Center section whose headline reads September 11, 2011, though the text cites the correct date of "9/11" as we know it around here to be 2001; the other is in the Central Park section, where it describes a bust of Mayor Mitchel and gives his name as James Purroy Mitchel, when in fact his name was JOHN Purroy Mitchel. As good as this book is, those particular errors could well have been avoided--particularly the September 11th year-typo. I think there should have been an errata sheet included with these books, and I have informed those whom I've given them as gifts that there are errors. I've seen numerous volumes of this type either recalled or relegated to clearance bins for a lot less in the way of errors they contained. Maybe there should be a revised edition...

Errored, which isn't good for a book of facts.

Received for Xmas, has serious errors: pp 7 "In the 1890s material from the excavations of the Brooklyn-Battery tunnel ... and the Lexington Ave Subway was used as landfill to enlarge Governors Island ..."

The Brooklyn Battery tunnel was opened in 1950. The East Side IRT, which runs under Lexington north of Grand Central, started construction in 1900 and opened in 1904 and the portion under Lexington Ave opened in 1918.

Later on the same page: "The bronze propeller on the monument was cast from one of the wooden propellers on Wright's Flyer" You can't cast a bronze propeller from wood. You could cast it in the fashion of the wooden one, or after the wooden one, but not from it.

Nothing Ever Dies: Vietnam and the Memory of War, by Viet Thanh Nguyen

All wars are fought twice, the first time on the battlefield, the second time in memory. From the author of the Pulitzer Prize–winning novel The Sympathizer comes a searching exploration of the conflict Americans call the Vietnam War and Vietnamese call the American War―a conflict that lives on in the collective memory of both nations.

From a kaleidoscope of cultural forms―novels, memoirs, cemeteries, monuments, films, photography, museum exhibits, video games, souvenirs, and more―Nothing Ever Dies brings a comprehensive vision of the war into sharp focus. At stake are ethical questions about how the war should be remembered by participants that include not only Americans and Vietnamese but also Laotians, Cambodians, South Koreans, and Southeast Asian Americans. Too often, memorials valorize the experience of one’s own people above all else, honoring their sacrifices while demonizing the “enemy”―or, most often, ignoring combatants and civilians on the other side altogether. Visiting sites across the United States, Southeast Asia, and Korea, Viet Thanh Nguyen provides penetrating interpretations of the way memories of the war help to enable future wars or struggle to prevent them.

Drawing from this war, Nguyen offers a lesson for all wars by calling on us to recognize not only our shared humanity but our ever-present inhumanity. This is the only path to reconciliation with our foes, and with ourselves. Without reconciliation, war’s truth will be impossible to remember, and war’s trauma impossible to forget.

Review
[Nguyen] produces close readings of the novels, films, monuments, and prisons that form ‘the identity of war’ in Vietnam, ‘a face with carefully drawn features, familiar at a glance to the nation’s people.’ Nguyen draws insights from Levinas, Ricoeur, and other philosophers, and his approach has affinities with that of hybridists such as W. G. Sebald and Maggie Nelson. The book is also notable for its inclusivity, addressing Cambodian, Laotian, Hmong, and Korean experiences and the competition for narrative dominance in bookstores and box offices. (New Yorker 2016-05-09)

In Nothing Ever Dies, Nguyen has written a powerful meditation on the manner in which memories are produced, cultivated, even empowered and subdued…He’s a lucid and robust voice for the forgotten―forgotten people, forgotten places, and forgotten memories most of all…Nothing Ever Dies is one man’s powerful entreaty to a country which has seen nearly endless conflict (one war running upon the next) for generations. (Matthew Snider PopMatters 2016-05-25)

Readers will discover the roots of Nguyen’s powerful fiction in this profoundly incisive and bracing investigation into the memory of war and how war stories are shaped and disseminated…Ultimately, Nguyen’s lucid, arresting, and richly sourced inquiry, in the mode of Susan Sontag and W. G. Sebald, is a call for true and just stories of war and its perpetual legacy. (Donna Seaman Booklist (starred review) 2016-04-01)

Nguyen’s work is a powerful reflection on how we choose to remember and forget. (Kirkus Reviews 2016-01-15)

This thought-provoking book is recommended for all students of the Vietnam War and those interested in historical memory. (Joshua Wallace Library Journal 2016-03-01)

[An] eloquent…narrative of the Vietnam War’s psychological impact on combatants and civilians…This is primarily a work that comes to grips with memory and identity through the arts…Nguyen succeeds in delivering a potent critique of the war and revealing what the memories of living have meant for the identities of the next generation. (Publishers Weekly 2016-05-16)

Is there hope for an ethics of memory, or for peace? Nothing Ever Dies reveals that, in our collective memories of conflict, we are still fighting the Forever War. Nguyen’s distinctive voice blends ideas with family history in a way that is original, unique, exciting. A vitally important book. (Maxine Hong Kingston, author of To Be a Poet)

Inspired by the author’s personal odyssey, informed by his wide-ranging exploration of literature, film, and art, this is a provocative and moving meditation on the ethics of remembering and forgetting. Rooted in the Vietnam War and its aftermath, it speaks to all who have been displaced by war and revolution, and carry with them memories, whether their own or of others, private or collective, that are freighted with nostalgia, guilt, and trauma. (Hue-Tam Ho Tai, editor of The Country of Memory: Remaking the Past in Late Socialist Vietnam)

Nothing Ever Dies provides the fullest and best explanation of how the Vietnam War has become so deeply inscribed into national memory. Nguyen’s elegant prose is at once deeply personal, sweepingly panoramic, and hauntingly evocative. (Ari Kelman, author of A Misplaced Massacre: Struggling over the Memory of Sand Creek)

Beautifully written, powerfully argued, thoughtful, provocative. (Marilyn B. Young, author of The Vietnam Wars, 1945-1990)

In Nothing Ever Dies, his unusually thoughtful consideration of war, self-deception and forgiveness, Viet Thanh Nguyen penetrates deeply into memories of the Vietnamese war…[An] important book, which hits hard at self-serving myths. (Jonathan Mirsky Literary Review 2016-07-01)

A Powerful Meditation
By Shaun D. Mullen
Wars are fought twice over -- once on the battlefield and once in our memory -- and that is the subject of Viet Thanh Nguyen's profound and challenging but hugely readable new book.

In the end, Nothing Ever Dies is a powerful meditation. It is a book to be read in small sips and not big gulps. It is worthwhile alone for revealing the intellectual roots of Nguyen's The Sympathizer, but even more so for confirming in compelling and passionate terms how we choose to remember and how we choose to forget, most notably that America is indeed fighting a forever War.

A good one here
By Hugo Johnson
A few of the early chapters are a little dry and theory-heavy. When Nguyen gets into analysis of the cultural artifacts of Vietnam and its war, it's a great book. You can see the influences that made "The Sympathizer" such a great book.

Fertility from the Ocean Deep, by Charles Walters

With the recent republication of Dr. Maynard Murray's Sea Energy Agriculture, readers rediscovered the forgotten legacy of an eco-ag pioneer. Murray's idea -- that ocean water contains a concentrated, perfect balance of trace minerals in bioavailable form -- seems almost as revolutionary today as when he introduced it three decades ago. In this fascinating book, Charles Walters examines Murray's career and the amazing successes that growers have experienced with his methods, as well as further developments in this technology by creative experimenters. Using hard data obtained in the field, Walters demonstrates that sea-solids fertilizers produce stress-resistant plants and food with naturally extended shelf life and vastly increased nutrient levels. Both an amazing narrative and a practical guide for improving soil and crop health, Fertility from the Ocean Deep is a must-read for everyone interested in the cutting edge of sustainable agriculture.

A fascinating explanation of the missing mineral link
By Mario Crespi
This book is not only a well written account of the live's of Dr. Maynard Murray and Rene Quinton who discovered the nutritional properties of sea water and their miraculous effects on agriculture, livestock and the human body. it explains how many of today's maladies have been solved with dietary supplementation of "ocean plasma" or a diluted isotonic solution of sea water. it shows how farmers have benefited from adding a diluted small amount of sea salt to their crops and how their yields have increased. It shows how livestock are sensitive to the mineral composition of the soil and how they will migrate to a field that has been treated as opposed to one that has not.

Table salt has two main ones Sodium Chloride. Sea salt has 92 different trace minerals. This book is a must for the farmer, the rancher and those interested in health. It is one of my greatest finds

Sea solids seem to be the perfect fertilizer
By MRM90
This is a great book. It all made perfect sense when I began reading about this. Ocean water is loaded with minerals, and what is it that most fertilizers and soils are lacking? Trace minerals.

One of the most interesting bits of information that I learned from reading this book is that hybrid crops are incapable of absorbing certain minerals, even if the soil has an abundance of them. They are bred and developed to grow on soils that have been depleted of nutrients because chemical fertilizers only supply NPK in extreme quantities, and maybe a few other minerals. Not only do chemical fertilizers fail to replenish the nutrients taken up by the plants from the soil, they poison it. Quite literally. As Charles Walters mentions in this book, toxic wastes from industry (including heavy metals) are being dumped into chemical fertilizers. And apparently chemical fertilizers are radiomimetic, meaning they mimic the effects of nuclear radiation!

Hmm, I wonder why the health of the people in the more industrialized nations of the world has been declining? Funny, I haven't heard anything about this in the debate on universal health care in the U.S., or anywhere else in the mainstream media. Nor by the environmentalists. So a little extra CO2 (which plant life will happily absorb) is alarming, by golly it's a lethal threat, but toxic chemicals being dumped into soils all over the world and ending up on the dinner table isn't? Plus, growing crops organically with mycorrhizal fungi and biochar actually sequesters carbon back into the soil, but do you see the "carbon footprint" preachers like Al Gore raising large sums of money (or donating it) for biochar research or insisting that all agriculture become truly organic? No you don't. Sara F. Wright and scientists from the University of California at Riverside and Stanford University showed that higher CO2 levels stimulate mycorrhizal fungi to produce more glomalin. "When atmospheric CO2 reached 670 parts per million -- the level predicted for the middle to late 21st century -- mycorrhizal fungal filaments (hyphae) grew three times as long and produced five times as much glomalin as fungi on plants growing with today's ambient level of 370 ppm." Glomalin is composed of about 30-40 percent carbon. The quote above was taken from an article titled "Soil Life and Carbon", published in the March 2008 issue of Acres USA magazine. You can find it on the Mycorrhizal Applications, Inc. website. There are even instructions for growing your own mycorrhizal fungi spore inoculum on the Rodale Institute website.

Open pollinated crops, according to Walter's, will not even grow in the soil that is used for the hybrids. They require a more balanced, nutrient rich soil, which in turn makes them more nutritious, and the animals and people that consume them are healthier as a result. Since hybrids (at least some) can't absorb certain minerals it would appear that the inbreeding process is causing genetic deformities. And if you read up on genetically modified foods you'll find that they are even worse.

I'd recommend going to farmer's markets if possible (reading articles by Catherine Austin Fitts on the web will make it crystal clear why we should all buy local when possible), and do your best to avoid most food at the supermarket. I'd recommend buying yourself some heirloom seeds if and when you begin a garden, buying some sea solids, buying or making your own Biochar (Terra Preta), buying some mycorrhizal fungi spores (and/or collecting some from your native soil), and magnetizing your seeds and irrigation water using the methods discovered by Albert Roy Davis and Walter Rawls for even more nutritious, more vigorous, higher yielding plants. I also highly recommend reading the articles on the web written by the Canadian researchers at Laval University, in Quebec, Canada, on Ramial Chipped Wood (RCW). The Canadian RCW discovery, like Maynard Murray's and Davis & Rawls' discoveries, are one of my greatest finds in agriculture.

The other book on this subject, Maynard Murray's "Sea Energy Agriculture", is also a very good book.

Follow-up to Sea Energy Agriculture
By Arthur Lee Kunes
A good follow-up to Sea Energy Agriculture but read Sea Energy Agriculture first... Learn why it is important to grow your food with the addition of a small amount of sea salt... One teaspoon per gallon... See the review for Sea Energy Agriculture...

From Publishers Weekly
In this fresh, contemporary collection of recipes, London chef Kochhar (Indian Essence) laments the lack of seafood in Indian cookery, which tends to fixate on heavy curries. He sets out to right this problem. This being a fish-only book, chapters include Soups and Stews, Starters, Salads, Fish for Everyday, and special-occasion fish dishes. Traditional Indian fare is the starting point, like mulligatawny soup, updated with a sprinkling of crabmeat; samosas, stuffed with spiced crayfish fish marinated in masala and served with paratha bread. English influences sneak in, too, by way of Bubble and Squeak with leftover fish, and fish kebab and chips on a roll. Other dishes, like Mumbai fish pizza and swordfish stroganoff showcase Kochhar's profound creativity and sense of humor. While the book's scope is narrow, this volume more than fulfills its stated goal. Even better, its recipes are simple enough to make this powerfully flavorful food accessible at home. (Dec.)

Superb collection of seafood recipes, with tantalizing pictures
By Atul V
Don't normally post reviews of cookbooks and found myself really liking this one; It contains a wide variety of recipes, from sweet and mild through hot and smoking. Another innovation is that the author has invited (and included) contributions from other chef's which, by spanning across many regions of India, makes this collection that much more inclusive.

The Cairo Code: A Thriller, by Glenn Meade

The international bestseller takes you on a fast-paced, nail-biting thrill ride from the Great Pyramids in Cairo, to behind the Nazi lines in Berlin, to the very seat of democracy as our hero tries to unravel a plot that could kill FDR and Winston Churchill.

To save the Western Allies, he must kill the woman he loves…

November 1943: Adolf Hitler sanctioned his most audacious mission ever—to kill US President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill while they visit Cairo for a secret conference to plan the Allied invasion of Europe, an invasion which threatens imminent defeat for Germany.

Only one man is capable of leading the defiant Nazi mission—Major Johann Halder, one of the Abwehr’s most brilliant and daring agents. He is a man with a tortured soul and a talent for the impossible. Accompanied by an expert undercover team and Rachael Stern, the young and beautiful Egyptologist, Halder must race against time across a hostile desert to reach Cairo and successfully complete the assignment, or else forfeit his life and the life of his son.

When US military intelligence hears about the plan, they assign Lieutenant-Colonel Harry Weaver, one of their best officers, to hunt down and eliminate Halder and his team. But for Weaver, as well as for Halder and Stern, there’s more than the balance of war and the lives of the Allied leaders at stake—a pact of love and friendship will be tested in the frantic, high-stakes chase to the death.

Based on a real attempt to kill the President, The Cairo Code is a breathless, suspenseful thriller—a heart-wrenching tale of friendship, love, and treachery set against the exotic and intriguing backdrop of wartime Egypt.

From Publishers Weekly
First published in slightly different form in 1999 under the title The Sands of Sakkara, this richly atmospheric thriller from Meade (Snow Wolf) examines the shifting nature of loyalty, patriotism, and love. In 1939, Johann "Jack" Halder, born of a Prussian father and an American mother, and his childhood friend Harry Weaver meet in Cairo on an archeological dig. Both men fall in love with Rachel Stern, another member of the team. When war is declared, they are inducted into the service of their respective countries. The Germans enlist Jack in a plot to assassinate a leader of the Allies; the Americans charge Harry with stopping him. Spies, counterspies, and the denizens of Cairo's murky underworld lend color as the lines between good and bad become increasingly blurred. This satisfying read includes a fast-paced plot, intriguing interpretations of historical fact, and characters forced to take a close look at their motives. (Mar.)\n

Another Glenn Mead "must read"
By nhmusher
Glenn Meade certainly has the talent to make his characters come alive. When I can envision what is happening in a book I know I am reading a winner. Of the 4 Meade books I have read "The Cairo Code" is second only to his "The Romanov Conspiracy". His ability to mix fact with fiction is smoothly done. Having not heard of this thankfully failed plot I came away with thinking just how fortunate we are today. This is a must read, especially for those who enjoy history.
