From the Introduction of this 128 page book: "Viking mythology is Norse mythology, and Norse mythology is in turn the best recorded version of Teutonic mythology. The Vikings were a Teutonic people who established themselves in Scandinavia between the late 8th century and the middle of the 11th century. They were characterized by a mixture of great chivalry and barbaric cruelty. Their gods dictated that men should be almost inhumanly brave in death, and so it was a token of respect to a defeated foe to give him the maximum latitude to display his bravery. In this respect the Vikings did, though, show a great deal of honesty: should one of their number be submitted to similar tortures it was expected of him that he should bear them without undue complaint, and should bear no grudge into the afterlife against his tormentors. Even the most warlike of the Vikings did pay lip-service to an ethical system. The mythology which the Norse people have left us has had a powerful affect on our imaginations. The list of modern fiction based on Norse mythology is long. Viking mythology is not a single continuous story; instead it is a set of stories - many of them very good ones - that relate to each other only with difficulty." From the rear cover: "The whole range of Viking Mythology covered, including gods, goddesses, and the afterlife. Over 100 full-color illustrations, including Viking artifacts; Compelling myths and legends told in a lively style."

A Viking's Delight
By Norseman
The author spent much time making certain each portion was 1) accurate and 2) understandable to all readers. Although Bullfinch's Mythology is most likely the book all other mythology tomes are graded by, this one deserves to be very near the top. Good job and a book that is enjoyable to read.

Lots of names, not a ton of info
By Jenny Johnson
The guy (a novelist he says) wrote this book like I would a grocery list. It was mostly a list of names with a few basic outlines. Also, not a lot of info on some subjects I thought were key. I was most interested in the Viking version of the end if days and this was covered in about half a page. The god Hel didn't even have a description. I'm ordering a few more books to try to fill in the gaps.

Interesting background knowledge to have while watching movies like Thor and The Avengers
By Douglas
Viking mythology has made numerous appearances in popular culture and movies. A notable example being Marvel's Thor and the Avengers. Ever since watching these two movies, I've had an interest in Viking gods and the many myths that surround them. An Introduction to Viking Mythology by John Grant helped sate this curiosity. Grant gives a detailed description of all the gods, goddesses, and other beings that exist in Viking mythology. He also does a good job in listing and explaining various Viking tales in an organized and concise way.
It's interesting to see what pop culture got wrong about Viking gods. For example, Thor is not actually the brother, or half-brother, as shown in Thor, of Loki. Another example would be that Odin has three wives, Frigga, Fjorgyn, and Rind, whereas in Thor, only Frigga is shown to be Odin's wife. Another interesting tidbit is that Odin is not the same as the Allfather, as some characters in the movies refer to Odin as. The Allfather existed before the beginning, a period when Odin doesn't even exist yet. This being can be thought of as the creator and the giants and gods, such as Odin, as the first race of beings (though that wouldn't be a very accurate description).
I recommend An Introduction to Viking Mythology to anyone who enjoys Thor, or any movies relating to the Viking gods. This book quickly corrects any previous misconceptions and is perfect for people like me who don't have much actual background knowledge of these ancient gods.
