Land Without Mirrors, by Marina Brown

Winner of 2013 Gold Medal for Adult Fiction from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association. On an idyllic Trinidadian island just before the outbreak of WWII, three children on the brink of adolescence struggle with what it means to live in a community solely inhabited by lepers and their caretakers-and whether they too are among the infected. While some in authority engage in strange experiments ostensibly meant to find the cause of Hansen's disease, others harbor dark secrets of violence. Whether a powerful priest or an enigmatic nun will win in their dangerous power struggle has grave implications for the three youths and their yearning for a different life. In a tale that spans nearly fifteen years, and moves from the mystical intrigues of Chacachacare's isolated Hindu culture, to Cartagena, Columbia, and finally, to Port of Spain, surprising twists of fate weave, unravel, and at last, bind the three young people together. Though the ominous undercurrent of World War II, the social changes affecting the Caribbean, and the intense search for a cure for leprosy wash throughout the tale, Land Without Mirrors is at heart a love story-mothers for their children; men for power and fame; and a sweet first love that grows to maturity.

Awsome Debut, Magical and Mysterious
By Claire
LAND WITHOUT MIRRORS is an impressive debut novel and I wholeheartedly recommend it to adults who love a great escape and a historical setting and a well-crafted tale. While it has some dark and even brutal moments, the story is ultimately quite inspirational--and certainly lovingly and lushly told. The novel is rich with complex characters, and, for me, the main three characters are youths-barely more than children--at the beginning of the story, all of them living in a leper colony though none have the disease. Their friendships and growth and their fight to survive those who would prey upon them are at the heart of the novel. There are gothic elements (and I mean that in a good way), and there are chapters that have a magical realism style to them, and there are plot twists as the story reaches from the leper colony to Trinidad and back to the leaper colony--but still, it's the characters that make it such a warm, rewarding story. For mystery readers, yes, there's some deep and convoluted mysteries in LAND WITHOUT MIRRORS, though I wouldn't call it a mystery per se. It's deep, beautifully imagined and awesomely researched--again, I recommend it to everyone who loves a grand book and a great read. Also, the cover is so beautiful you really should consider owning the tangible book!

fascinating story
By Donna S. Meredith
"Land Without Mirrors" combines historical elements of a leper island with magical realism and a love story for a winning combination. Brown has an extensive vocabulary and excellent use of language that elevates the story above the average novel. Be sure to read this one. You won't be disappointed.

Couldn't Put It Down -- Great Read!
By HoppingKnight
Here's what made this book so hard for me to put down: it's a well written full-to-the-brim gripping story made even more compelling by the author's infusion of her own experiences and other significant talents besides writing.
Who better to know how to write a captivating, moving story about a tortuous debilitating disease like leprosy -- about death and near death -- with heart and extraordinary realism than a hospice nurse? About handling sea going vessels in rough weather other than someone who has sailed around the world and dealt with them herself? (She also writes for Sail Magazine.) The author has been to Chacachacare and experienced the stirring impact of seeing empty medicine tubes scattered across the island still there almost 30 years later -- and saw the scrawling across infirmary walls by a leprous child with then unrealistic dreams, "When I grow up I want to be a teacher." She's listened to the anguished stories of lepers who once lived on that forlorn island of outcasts and through her fictional story gives us insight into the wretchedness of their lives.
The author is also an accomplished musician and artist -- these, too, are woven into the book -- she paints those who might rise as champions in ethereal word colors -- and makes rhythm phrases of ocean, wind and sky so we can see the beauty of this tropical island against the ugly raw world of a hideous disease and the exploitation of innocents.
This is the kind of fast moving exciting story rich with intrigue and a strong cast of fascinating characters that would easily translate into a riveting high octane movie -- but I'm sure the book will always be better.
