If you love audiobooks, you MUST check this out!

This audiobook has so much more than I would have first thought. There is such variety in general in content that was thought provoking as well as inspiring and it is presented in a way that, at least for me, I was inspired and encouraged to do more and to be more. This audio book was something that let me think deeper about my own journey as well as about my relationships with others. I also was able to think about the future and where I want to see myself going personally and professionally. This was the perfect audiobook for me at this point in my life as I am reassessing my priorities and seeing where I want to focus next. If you love audiobooks, you MUST check this out!

Great (Though Not As Compelling as What I Know For Sure)

It's been almost a year since I listened to and loved Oprah Winfrey's What I Know For Sure. So having loved that audiobook and having been a longtime subscriber to O Magazine, I was thrilled when the latest audiobook from the Oprah empire found its way in my mailbox.

I admit, it took me quite so time to sit down and listen to this audiobook because I had a feeling it wouldn't live up to my expectations. And...well, there are two sides to this coin. One on side, I really enjoyed the stories being told here, the lessons being learned here, and so on. There are so many different journeys from so many diverse lives in these stories about loss and survival, being vulnerable and accepting help, taking chances and embracing the unknown. Saying yes. I really appreciate the fact that some of the most touching life lessons from O Magazine contributors can be found in one place. That in itself is something to be very happy about.

What's great about this is that it's more reflection, more insight and inspiration than it is a traditional self help book filled with direction and advice and facts and not a whole lot of substance or depth. So, I really liked the structure of the essays. They were each so distinct and each left their mark and it never felt preachy. I loved how most of these essays are simply about how these people found happiness, what the turning point was for them in their search for joy. It's quite something to see the turning points in other people's lives. The human experience is something else. In all of this, there was an overall theme of optimism and joy and open arms and gratitude. An overall sense of peace. Even in all of the mess that life throws at us. I loved that overall theme of relinquishing control and enjoying the adventures of life or learning to appreciate and shape and extend our place in this world. I especially loved "Book Lust" by Pamela Erens and "Stop Whining" by Roxane Gay.

Now on the other side, I didn't quite connect with the audiobook as much as I had hoped. Narrated by five people, I only found two of the voices to be extremely compelling, two to at least hold my attention, and one to be quite frankly...boring. So if you're on a road trip and looking for a more serene listening experience, this is perfect. Go with the audiobook format and sit with this for three hours. Otherwise, I think this is much better suited consuming as a coffee table book and I'll stick to The Moth for more insight and inspiration through the spoken word. But because I am such a fan of the Oprah empire, you know I am definitely looking forward to whatever is released next!

RIGHT TO THE TOP!

It has always been my practice to find out who the giants in a field are and to use them as my source when learning a subject.

Liz Greene is probably the most dynamic and competent astrologer practicing in the world today. There are many others, but I am always drawn to the no nonsense style of Liz Greene.

She draws on a vast knowledge of Astrology, and of psychology. I am convinced that no astrologer should be allowed to practice without being well versed in both. Astrology is a guidance tool. And, since it's your life that is being guided, the importance of pure and unbiased knowledge by your chosen astrologer is paramount to your smooth and effective development as an astrologically led traveller on your path through your lifetime.

Liz Greene offers that kind of expertise.

All of her treatises on the subject seem to bring you smack into a face to face awareness of exactly what your toolbox for life contains to help you be the best you can be.

A real analysis of the psyche!

It is amazing how Greene and Sasportas can deepen into the human soul only by searching through the chart! By reading this book you can become conscious of all the issues that got place from your birth till your adolescence and how these affected you. It was amazing, and I am about to get the other 3 books of Saportas' and Greene's Seminars! Thank you!

ABOUT THE KINDLE FORMAT

This is an excellent book that deserves all five stars but the KINDLE format is terrible. Who does this? There are at least two mispelled words on every page and I'm talking about words missing half of their letters to the point where they are unrecognizable. It's not a cheap kindle book so they should deliver a quality product. Very dissapointed!

The best one yet! Love their trip to Italy and they're finally both on the same page of their love story! The colorblind correction glasses and the "old block" and the "the chip" gift was a great way to make their announcement. Of course, the identity thief is making more bold moves. Can't wait to for the next book.

What did I like? I really enjoy this, it was a quick read and each of the books thereafter was the same. I was lucky and was able to read them all one after the other and not have to wait till the next one came out. They were romantic stories full of humor, laughs, secrets, mysteries, and poignancy. The characters were fantastic and quirky with that romantic twist. Each story being a stepping stone to the final book and really should be read as I did (one after the other).

What will you like? As I said quick reads with the modern twist on the old fashion romances. Updated to the lifestyles of today and yet with that old fashion thing in it called LOVE! Even though these are novellas they are well developed and you can see the work of the author’s research. I think you will fall in love with each of the characters and will be caught up in the storyline. You will enjoy each book with all the twists and unexpected turns. The rich part of the books is how all the characters interact through the series with the big finale in the last book. As I read I just couldn’t wait to get to the next book. I am looking forward to maybe seeing this couple brought up in other books so we can see how they are. Hint, Hint!

After WWII, cars became more accessible, and teens were now hitting the roads for excitement. Many horrific accidents occurred all over the country. Felsen was specifically approached to write a book about the dangers of teen drivers. Bud Crayne was the typical tough guy with a chip on his shoulder. Dressed in a black leather jacket, black boots, and blue jeans, he was not the clean cut kid. Adults cursed him, while teens admired him. He drove fast and wild. His idea was to "drive your way out" of any trouble. While it worked for Bud, others weren't as fortunate. A couple of horrific wrecks make him question his need for speed. Stephen King, when interviewed for an article called Reading While Famous, named Felsen as one of four authors who most influenced him when he was young. A special book

I have a few thoughts on this book and why it is a literary treasure. First published in 1950, it was written at a high/middle school level and is an easy read. The story is of a high school boy in an isolated midwestern town. His love is his hand built hot rod. It gives him much joy and is also a source of a lot of trouble. He has girl problems, friend problems, and law problems. He can always fall back on his car. I needn't recount the plot in any more detail, and I don't want to give anything away to ruin it for a future reader.

Although author Henry Gregor Felsen was not a master novelist, he was good. Unintendedly, he wrote a time capsule that captured a unique era in Americana and in our car culture. The War was over and the country was prospering. Car ownership, with its joys and hazards, was becoming accessible to almost all teenagers. This was truly the dawn of the "hot rod" culture, and indeed this title of Felsen's novel was not a household word at the time.

Felsen documents the spotlights, white steering wheels, and squirrel tails that adorned the early rods. The multi-carbs, straight pipes, and 3-speed stick shifts. And the jargon that now sounds so dated, but was so out front at the time. The machines were incredibly simple by today's measure, but even then there was a sort of priesthood of those few boys/men that knew how they worked and could make them run (I intentionally exclude the feminine gender, because that's how it was. Though I never met one, I suppose there were exceptions, just as there is the occasional two-headed cow).

The innocence - no real booze or drug problems. Felsen is accused of being "preachy", and indeed a central theme of the book is the need for a revolution in traffic safety by young drivers. There were no seat belts. Roadway surfaces were narrow and often poor. Brake systems were a joke by today's standards. In the state the story is set in, there was not even a state highway speed limit. Cars were becoming faster - much faster - and a new epidemic was emerging of teenage deaths from high speed crashes on public highways. I did my own "rodding" in the 70's and the teens and fast cars were still then, and are now, a dangerous mixture. Felsen caught on early and used his writing talent to proclaim a noble message. Felsen had an accurate perception regarding the chemistry of a male teenage driver and a powerful car.

History and "messages" aside, this is a fun read. The story is engaging and multi-layered. There was a police chase sequence that even had my heart rate elevated a bit. I first read this book about 40 years ago and was entertained but did not fully appreciate what the author accomplished. This was not written by a 21st century writer trying to recreate what was going on 58 years ago . . . Felsen was writing it as it was happening. Awesome.

Felsen wrote a few other books in this genre including "Street Rod", its sequel "Rag Top" (a great piece), "Crash Club", and "Road Rocket". He also authored numerous other military and juvenile books.

A real kick in the head for a wild teenager!

I first found the book among some of my fathers' things and well, I just couldn't put it down. I just finished it and what a book! The story of a 17 yr. old building his own Rod, which was his companion, friend, and enemy. Just him and his ride. Sounds a little like myself. The main character finds the rules of life the only way, the hard way.

A must read book for new, or soon to be drivers!

It's been twenty years since I read this book and I still remember the ending so clearly it scares me. The story is dated, but has many valuable lessons.
