Laura Manni was formerly Research Associate at the Institute of Education.

Iram Siraj is a Professor at the Institute of Education, University of London, and a visiting Professor at the University of Wollongong. She co-led on the Effective Pre-school, Primary, and Secondary Education (EPPSE) longitudinal study, and the highly influential Researching Effective Pedagogy in the Early Years (REPEY) study, which first developed the concept of Sustained Shared Thinking (SST). She is a co-author of the ECERS-E and has published widely on quality, pedagogy, and curriculum.

Love this book

Love this book, but unfortunately mine came in a pretty rough condition. It is dog-eared, and there's a big mark in the back that looks like someone took some sort of cylinder shaped object and pushed it into the back.

Jake was pretty dumb.

I liked this book, but Jake was really dumb to run away in the beginning. He should have just stayed and avoided the whole thing and not try to get everyone killed. Some of the parts were pretty good like when the wicked doctor-lady came out, but some of them were kind of boring, and they went on and on and on about the machines they used. It got kind of old after a while. But still, great book. It's pretty fun.

Half great and half boring I think. Some endings were so great while others were... yes, dumb boring. Wish I can give it 4 and a half stars. It deserves that. But...oh well, count this book as a great book then. So as I say, kindness has kindness, something like that. I think Axel is actually not evil after all.

Decepcionante

En esta novela, los agentes del servicio secreto Tommy y Tuppence Bersford ya tiene mas setenta años, y cuando están apunto del retiro tienen que resolver un antiguo misterio que habita en la casa a la que se acaban de mudar.

Este libro resulta un poco decepcionante, el misterio tarda muchísimo en despegar, Christie nos enreda en un montón de reuniones de ancianos, excursiones de niños, reparaciones domesticas, diálogos extremadamente barrocos, y suposiciones vacías que al final solo sirven para enredar al lector. El tema de la vejez como punto critico de la obra, el pasado, la fama que la pareja protagonista ha ganado en su extensa carrera no terminan de encajar. Después de la segunda mitad del libro es cuando empieza en verdad a avanzar la trama, metiendo mas en al lector en la historia, pero los villanos que aparecen de repente son descubiertos de manera precipitada sin dar lógica al relato, llegando a un clímax mas bien desinflado y a un desenlace que no emociona ni sorprende, dejando al lector con mas dudas que las que tenia al comenzar el libro.

Es triste que una saga de una pareja de espías tan divertido como Tommy y Tuppence cierre de una manera tan desabrida y aburrida como esta.

The authors draw on unpublished and, in some cases, hitherto unknown material to present a comprehensive new account of the life of this enigmatic and controversial Scottish genius.
In January 1926 Baird was the first publicly to demonstrate real television. Other pioneering achievements followed, including the first transatlantic transmission, the first demonstrations of colour television and stereoscopic television, and the first video recordings. In the 1930s he twice televised the Derby, and was the first to demonstrate television technology in the cinema in both black-and-white and colour. During World War II he developed high-definition and stereoscopic television in colour, and invented the first all-electronic colour television tube. He also made significant advances in radio imaging, secret signalling, fibre optics, infra-red scanning, and fast facsimilie transmission.
Throughout his life he struggled with ill health and lack of funding, to the extent that he paid for his initial research efforts and his final, heroic, and perhaps most startling, developments out of his own pocket.
This balanced, thoroughly documented and splendidly readable account throws new light not only on Baird himself, but on many of those associated with him. Truth is separated from legend, and the facts are uncovered behind Baird's auto-biographical memoir, published in 1988 as Sermons, Soap and Television, the text of which can now be compared with a recently discovered manuscript containing his own corrections.
Fresh information is revealed about the 'lost' years in London and Hastings in the early 1920s, which includes for the first time details of the company Baird established to sell soap, his unconventional romance, and the Falkirk connection.
Special treatment is given to Baird's troubled relationship with the BBC, and in particular to the role played by the corporation's director general, Sir John Reith. There is a full account of Baird's brave efforts to establish a presence in the USA. Also disclosed is the background to the boardroom coup which resulted in Baird being relieved of his duties as managing director of the company which he had founded.
In the light of their review of existing sources and examination of fresh evidence, the authors reach several conclusions which modify or challenge received opinion. Much of the documentation of from family and other archives, including Baird's wartime letters to his friend Sydney Moseley, extracts from the private diaries of Eustace Robb (the BBC's first television producer), company memos and reports of the early 1930s, and many of the sixty photographs, has never before been published.
