Facenating view of the old west from a (partly) first hand 19th century perspective

This book is part historical sketches, part biographical sketches (Kit Carson etc.), part anecdotes and part memoir. As such it is episodic. It is organized in roughly chronologic order, beginning with the opening of the trial and continuing through the coming of the railroad. Early chapters rely on diaries and news paper accounts. Later chapters rely more heavily on the author's conversations with various frontiersmen and his own experience. Inman was an Army officer who took part in the Indian wars that followed the Civil War and later became a journalist in Kansas. His writings about life in the west were popular in the late 19th century.

This book is well written. There is a fair amount of actual history here but this shouldn't be read as a scholarly historical work. It was clearly written to be popular with a general audience. It was very interesting to read first-hand or second-hand, pre-cinema origins of most of the clichés of western movies of the 30's 40's and 50's (circling the wagons to defend Indian attacks, outlaws and Indians holding up stage coaches, the cavalry riding to the rescue, etc.).

Fair warning: Inman's descriptions of Native Americans will seem jarring to some 21st century readers. He clearly admires certain Native leaders and admires the some tribal skills. At the same time he attributes many negative qualities to Native Americans as a racial group. His attitudes are not particularly surprising coming from an 19th century man who fought the Indians but all the same some readers will find them offensive.

This is a marvellous collection of old tales to fascinate any lover of American history although these stories may not be entirely reliable. Even so they are interesting in themselves as reprentatives of the lore of the Trail. For the true history buff a great starting point to begin to trace original sources. Never a dull moment. The only dryness here is in the landscape never in the saga.

I purchased this book based on my karate instructors advice and it is an awesome book! Very visual and for the most part easy to follow (I did review some of the forms with my instructor and he does a couple things a little different but all in all VERY HELPFUL!)

A Fast Way to Learn Forms

This book is so lavishly illustrated and well organized that the student can learn forms directly from the book. I know because I have used the book to learn a number of them.
After you learn a form, have an instructor critique it. Then go home and refine the form further.
I own an original edition of "The Complete Book of Taekwondo Forms" and consider it a collector's item. Though I am a black belt myself, I occasionally refer to the book when I am not sure about a particular step.
The forms covered are the chungdo kwan forms (chunji, tangoon, tauson, way hyo, etc.).

This Oxford University Press title, one in a series of medical fact books, is a thin book with little information. It does give basic facts about panic, and some good practical advice for "self-help", but the information concerning psychotropic medications and treatments is misleading and outdated. If you want this information a basic self-help book would be cheaper and more useful.

Somehow I discovered Mary Poppins at the our local library as a child I immediately was enthralled and enchanted by the books. They taught me that there is both practicality and magic in life, and that I needed to explore and exist in both. This analysis of the Poppins books by PL Travers gets it The author presents the setting in Edwardian England, social roles and status, Travers biography and writing style, insights into the governess' role and the deeper meaning of Mary Poppins adventures. Originally written in Italian, it seems to be particularly well translated. I do disagree with the authorin one regard. I see Poppins as a powerful witch, not merely a trickster figure, who could cross the boundaries between the mundane and the magical and could create change and bring things to order. Although she does present paradoxical and subversive events, these adventures on the children's outings are Experiences, not to be explained. And Mary Poppins never explains anything!
This book is an analysis of the book series, not the Disneyesque cheerfully odd and greatly diminished cleaned up screen Mary. Apparently issues now in paperback, it's much more affordable than previously. If you love this character and want deeper insights definitely read this book.
