Great book, it’s not only about reporting in APEX

After reading the book I can say it's very interesting I really liked the content, I learned many things about reports in APEX that I didn’t know. Also the book covers many different areas of APEX, it’s not only about reporting as it also speaks briefly about APEX integration with OBIEE, SAP Crystal Reports, Google API, Oracle R Enterprise and the migration from MS Access and Oracle Form to APEX, as well covers the history and architecture of APEX.

This book presents a lot of hands-on examples for interactive and classic reports but forces the reader to perform the examples with the provided test schema, the idea is not bad but it would be easier if the scheme were taken from the samples already provided by Oracle.

Finally I want to say that the author shows his great knowledge not only in the area of development in APEX as well in other tools, I recommend reading this book to expand the concepts and not just stick with reports in APEX.

This book has helped me improving my applications from the first pages! Not only APEX Reporting but lot (maybe too) of Techniques and Tricks about pl/sql, analytics functions, ajax, webservices and so on.

Technical nuggets overshadowed by Unmet Expectations

This book contained a ton of great hands-on examples of different reporting techniques and methods for both interactive reports and classic reports. It also integrated some advanced Oracle SQL mechanisms into an ApEx environment.

Despite the technical nuggets throughout the book (and there are several), I had unmet expectations as I read through it. The book reads more like a series of hands-on post-it notes on several different reporting technologies. I was expecting to find the book full of explanations and descriptions of the various reporting concepts and capabilities within ApEx. I was hoping to see a dedicated section on report templates rather than just mentioning how a report template would be set up within a different context. I was also hoping to learn about the Reports section of Shared Components (Report Queries and Report Layouts as of ApEx 4.2), but there was no mention of that aspect of ApEx at all. Of the eight chapters in the book, only three of them actually focused on native reporting capabilities of ApEx. Rather, most of the book introduces several different technologies to integrate with ApEx.

The book also forces the reader to perform the examples with the provided test schema while reading the book. I did not do this and found parts of the book hard to follow. The requirement to perform the examples rather than just read the book, unmet expectations as described above, and an unusually high number of grammatical errors made the book hard to read and enjoy.

I have been following the Blog this book was written from for the last year and it is clear that the observations are a reflection of both the current state of America and the difficulties that face the Nation on Race. Written with humor and fully backed with both news clips and Statistics, the Site is funny, insightful, Thought Provoking and Honest.

I think this is an important book that should be read by everyone in the USA. It is an important work with some ground breaking ideas. This book probably will not be accepted well by those with an Agenda of denial or concealment on the subject. Keep an open mind and look for yourself. You will come away impressed, enlightened and perhaps with a few more jokes as well!

You'll have to decide if it's best to laugh or cry

The blog this book is based on has provided me with lots of thought-provoking points in the last year or so. The social, political, cultural, economic and educational facts of black life in America are laid bare with dead-on commentary and documentation to back it up. No doubt it will soon be attacked here as "racist", as just about everything in BRA (Black Run America) eventually is, but make no mistake - this is simply the book form of what millions of reasonable, well-intentioned people can only talk about in hushed tones among trusted friends. The name calling this book will inspire is simply confirmation of what is one of the main points of the entire SBPDL project - that anything that doesn't get the full approval of black opinion is suspect by definition.

If the social, political & cultural behavior of any other identifiable group in America - Baptists, red heads, left-handed people, Trekkies - were so obviously radically different from the mainstream, countless books like this would have been written about them long ago. Blacks are always the last group to be put under the microscope because we all know what we will find - SBPDL takes us there and the results will force you to make your own decision about whether you should laugh or cry.

The cool thing about the Gideon's Bible that a lot of people don't realize is it's not just a basic "pew bible." Hard to believe with all of the complex study Bible's you can buy that this little hotel stand Bible is anything but basic.

In the front there is a really neat insert titled - "HELP IN TIME OF NEED" - With multiple scripture references for certain situations - I like to think of it as an emergency help desk -> "The way of salvation, comfort in time of loneliness, comfort in time of sorrow, relief in time of suffering, guidance in time of decision, protection in time of danger, courage in time of fear, peace in time of turmoil, rest in time of weariness, strength in time of temptation, warning in time of indifference, and forgiveness in time of conviction."

There are also a few other pages for suggested readings that will really do you a lot of good to get the basics down, or even to reiterate the basics so that someone who just grabs it, or is totally unfamiliar with it - won't just pick it up and start reading genesis.

DRAMA AT ITS BEST

With friends like these, who really needs enemies. Kayla, Trina and Evelyn, along with Cedric, Keith and Bryson have created their own TV like Drama series. The three female frenemies have a love hate relationship, and no matter what issues (which are plenty), they encounter, they still come back to each other to try to make amends. Even with trust issues on the line and many hard life circumstances coming full circle between them and their male companions, nothing is off limits!! Brenda Hampton is a very gifted storyteller and writes literary fiction, that truly mirrors reality today. I can't wait for the third installment of this series (BFFs: 3) and all of the new DRAMA that I am sure it will BRING!!

Brenda Hampton's BFF # 2, without a doubt, is a must read if you are looking for drama, drama and more drama. This book takes off from the very first page and does not slow down. Our three best friends Kayla, Evelyn and Trina along with Cedric, Keith and Bryson, sets the stage for what is to become a very interesting book filled with sex, lies, deceit, romance, scandal and revelations. This book had me showing all kinds of emotions such as anger, sadness and joy. Brenda Hampton has given the reader interesting characters that we either love or hate. The conflicts in the story are relatable and real. The story plays out like a modern black soap opera because of the fireworks that captured within the pages of the book. This book is well-written and the story flows very well. I would not expect nothing less from Brenda Hampton. She is a dynamite writer and she creates wonderful stories and characters in every book that she writes. I hope that the BFF series continue becuase I am anxious to see what's next for Kayla, Evelyn, Trina, Cedric, Keith and Bryson. I highly recommend this book. Keep up the great work Ms. Hampton.

About the Author
KATHERINE BANKOLE-MEDINA is a Professor of History at Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland. She is a scholar of African American and United States history, African American Studies, Africalogy, Race Relations, Black Women, Slavery and Medicine Studies, and the History of Science, Medicine and Technology. Dr. Bankole-Medina has published numerous scholarly articles on these subjects, including her book, Slavery and Medicine: Enslavement and Medical Practices in Antebellum Louisiana. Her research and scholarship has appeared in the Journal of Black Studies, Plantation Society and Race Relations (edited by Thomas J. Durant and J. David Knottnerus), Afrocentricidade: Uma Abordagem Epistemologica Inovadora (edited by Elisa Larkin Nascimento); Handbook of Black Studies (edited by Molefi Kete Asante and Maulana Karenga) and Malcolm X A Historical Reader (edited by James L. Conyers, Jr. and James Smallwood). She served on the Editorial Board of The Encyclopedia of Black Studies (edited by Molefi Kete Asante and Ama Mazama, Los Angeles: Sage, 2005). Since 2004 she has worked as the founding editor of Africalogical Perspectives: Historical and Contemporary Analysis of Race and Africana Studies. Her most recent publications include an article on African American women’s studies, the life and legacy of Fannie Jackson Coppin, and on Charles Hamilton Houston. Her current research focuses on antebellum medical racism and contemporary analysis of the 2015 Baltimore Uprising. The recipient of numerous scholarship, teaching and service awards, Dr. Bankole-Medina was twice named most influential person in the state of West Virginia. She is a recipient of the Judith Stitzel Endowment Award for teaching and research, The Martin Luther King, Jr. Award for Scholarship, The Cheikh Anta Diop International Conference Award for Editorial Excellence, and she was selected for the first Distinguished Senior Faculty Research grant awarded by Coppin State University. A readable and thorough introduction to fixed income markets

Extremely readable. One could read this book in a single sitting and get a great jumpstart to an understanding of fixed income markets - the why and the how.
Wiseman has an engaging style of writing which prevents the stifled yawns normally associated with reading this genre, and keeps one turning the pages...
The book nicely covers the fundamental theory of why there exists a fixed income market, then turns to the players and discusses what they do, and finally covers some of the fundamental trading strategies and math employed to turn a buck.

i could not put this book down

i found this book very well written. It provides detail and yet covers that what it says it does. I find that Wiseman explains concepts in a verystraight forward way. Although i had to pause to eat and think about some of the financial products discussed such as "par yields". I found I was able to understand the book. The book contains some of the trader jargon and a outline of the players involved in the market. I think that anyone who wants to something with securities or trading should read this, before/during/after an intership. As the english say "Wiseman" is the dogs ballocks!! get this book!

I needed a primer on this topic and this book absolutely did the trick. It covers all of the basics without getting bogged down in academics (which most books tend to do). If you're just looking for the "who, what, why, hows" then this is a good choice.

Peter W. Kick is a native of the Catskill Mountains, is a New York State licensed guide, and author of several hiking and cycling guides. His previous books with AMC include AMC Catskill Mountain Guide, AMC's Best Day Hikes in the Catskills & Hudson Valley, and Discover the Adirondacks. Kick's work has also appeared in Backpacker, Sailing, Cruising World, and Adirondack Life. He is a life member of AMC and an AMC trip leader. He lives in Saugerties, New York.

Terrific, especially if one learns some lessons on preparations ...

Terrific, especially if one learns some lessons on preparations and actual hiking. I was hiking on Mt Katahdin in the summer of 1963. We met the Ranger stationed there. He was a terrific guy, who needlessly died because a woman didn't have the sense to stay on the trail. He couldn't save her, got caught in a blizzard, and just sat down and died after his futile efforts. I am so glad there are now fines and expected payments from those who disregard all the warnings, (see 2d story), and bring out a dozen others in a horrendous storm, and then do NOT even make a contribution for the efforts of these wonderful guides.

These stories make everything real, and can promote good habits. I became a Girl Scout leader, a Den Mother and was very careful with my own family, after reading of "our" Ranger back in 1963.

The first chapter was published in the Appalachian Mountain Club ...

The first chapter was published in the Appalachian Mountain Club magazine, and it was so compelling that I purchased the book. As another reviewer stated, every chapter is riveting. I'm a search and rescue volunteer, and appreciated the in-depth analysis of how each mishap occurred, what the search and rescue response entailed, and lessons learned. The book clearly required a major investment of time and energy to thoroughly research each incident. A must-read for anyone who enjoys wilderness pursuits.

Highly recommend for any outdoors person

I'm an AMC Lifetime member, avid trail runner, cyclist, skier, etc. and absolutely *loved* this book.

While the majority of stories are quite tragic the author does a very nice job analyzing the variables that factored into the circumstances whether human error or uncontrollable. Some of the stories were downright chilling, whether it's a group of close friends sacrificing their lives to save one another or a hiking being knocked out in Tuckerman Ravine and sliding into a crevasse (particularly since I happened to be there the following weekend). What's most surprising about the victims is that most of them had above-average outdoor experience. They generally weren't rookies overdoing it for the first time but people who might have been unprepared for bad luck or unintentionally made a bad decision.

The authors use of maps for most stories was very helpful and I found myself flipping back and forth between the pages to reference back to the maps as I read. I'm not a particularly fast reader but was able to finish it over the course of 4-5 sessions of reading.

I would strongly recommend this book for any AMC member, New England outdoors-person, or weekend warrior as an engaging, educational, and humbling read. About the Author
Juan Mascaro was born in Majorca, and later studied modern and oriental languages, Sanskrit, Pali and English at Cambridge University. He died in 1987, and was lauded as a great translator of our time.

This is a beautiful translation of India's great scripture.

The Upanishads, translated by Juan Mascaro, is a beautiful translation, which, like Mascaro's translation of The Bhagavid Gita, breathes simplicity and purity throughout. The Upanishads are maxims on the spiritual life, and are poetry, scripture, guidance all in one. "The truth is hidden by a circle of gold. Unveil the truth, oh God of light, that I might see!" "It is not for the love of the husband that the husband is dear, but for the soul that is in the husband." "Behold, all that lives and walks on earth. Leaving the transient, take refuge in the eternal, set not your heart on another's possession. Working thus, a man can wish for a life of one hundred years. Only actions done in God, bind not the heart of man." (I paraphrase). This collection is truly wonderful, and should be a part of everyone's spiritual library, along with the major scriptures of all the world's faiths.

A Purist Blushes

I first read the Upanishads at age 14, ploughing through the complete literal translation by Swami Nikhilânanda with its incessant footnotes and daunting commentaries. I had heard that the Brhadâranyaka Upanishad was the oldest, so I thought I should read that first. Bad choice. All the older Upanishads are packed with unexplained references to Vedic ritual, to archaic cosmologies and models of the body. I was fascinated but understood perhaps 1%.

A year later I found the Penguin Classic translated by Juan Mascaró and light shone on my mind. I suddenly understood what it was all about. His eloquent words opened a door for me, I went through and I have never gone back.

I now own 8 translations of the Upanishads, partial or complete, and I have read a number of others. Even with no Sanskrit, I can see Mascaró's versions for what they are: old-fashioned, Romantic, poetic paraphrases. My current Penguin says, First published 1965, but portions of these translations were printed under the title "Himalayas of the Soul" as early as 1938. Mascaró was writing in the era that gave us World War II, the Holocaust, Stalin's Purges, and yet in spirit he dwells with Wordsworth, Blake and Shelley, the Spanish mystics, Shakespeare and the translators of the King James Version.

I am known as a purist, a stickler, a nit-picker. Take the Mundaka Upanishad, 3:1,1. Mascaró translates, "Two birds, two sweet friends, dwell on the self-same tree". Others have, "Two birds, always united..." or "Two birds, close companions..." Mascaró has merely added the unjustified, unnecessary, weak and gooey word "sweet"... yet somehow I don't mind.

Useless for any scholarly purposes, this is still probably the best version for the general reader. Despite his atrocious liberties, Mascaró has got the heart of the matter. If you become deeply interested of course you will go on to read other translations: this book includes only short excerpts from the longer Upanishads. If you don't know these works, they are the world's oldest spiritual writings and have never been surpassed, or equalled. They are poetic, full of imagery rather than philosophy, and once read are never forgotten.

Nice to know that some things that you have, or may have, experienced, have been around for over 2,500 years. This mind expanding translation can help one to regain focus and balance in today's much too hectic living. Putting the trivial in perspective, this is one that is not only useful in everyday life, but will stick with you forever; and then some . . .
